National Coalition in D.C. to Speak for People with Lupus on Capitol Hill
Your Voice for Lupus Research—Coast to Coast

LRI National Coalition Members with Senator Barbara Boxer of CaliforniaThe LRI National Coalition spread across Capitol Hill in early March to speak with members of the House and Senate.

Their message, delivered for you:

  • Be aware of lupus and the damage it can inflict on young women in particular
  • Vote for increased funding for research on the causes and potential treatments for lupus
  • Encourage implementation of the 5-year Trans-Institute plan for lupus research at the National Institutes of Health
  • Recognize and help us do something about the notably high number of black, Hispanic, Native American, and Asian Americans who develop lupus.

Update: Advocacy Victory!
NIH Plan, Initiated by LRI Clarion Call, Brightens Horizon for Lupus Research

LRI National Coalition Florida representative, Congressman Bill Young and LRI President Margaret DowdThe Future Directions of Lupus Research—a broad and strategic plan to guide the nation's investment in lupus research-was published in August 2007.

Thanks to those who made it happen! A key figure was House Appropriations Committee Chairman, Bill Young (R-Fla). LRI advocates first met with him in 2004.

The outpouring of gratitude for Rep. Young has been immense. In March 2008, LRI President Margaret G. Dowd (L) and the National Coalition's Sandi Frear of Florida (R) presented the hundreds of letters of thanks sent to him through the LRI.

Thanks, Congressman Young!

Lupus Research InstituteSunglasses once worn by such stars as Beyonce, Tommy Lee Jones and Bruce Springsteen were auctioned off at the Winter Equestrian Festival on February 10th, raising over $110,000 for innovative science at the Lupus Research Institute. Michael J. Fox, Regis Philbin, Jay-Z, Lou Dobbs, Michael Kors, and Tracy Ullman also donated shades.

Success of the event is largely attributed to the work and contributions of honorary chairs and fashion designers Mark Badgley and James Mischka, and chairperson Jenny Oz LeRoy of Tavern on the Green in New York and Florida.
